Focus Points are spent between missions in Personnel → Focus Tree. Buy ranks in order: a later node does not unlock until the previous node is purchased. For all 8 standard Specializations, the primary slot can reach 17 ranks; the secondary slot stops at 14. That three-rank difference is the final node of each branch. If the rank you want is one of those final nodes, that Specialization must be primary before you spend.
Changing or swapping a Specialization refunds all spent Focus Points. The current rule lists no fee or lost percentage. You still need to rebuild the tree in order and meet any roster-level gate before the next deployment.
The short rule
Choose the slot from the deepest rank you need, not from the number of points you currently hold. Primary reaches Passive V, Standard VI, and Ultimate VI. A standard secondary stops at Passive IV, Standard V, and Ultimate V.
Before you spend
Check four things while you are still between missions:
- Eligibility: confirm that this Operator can use the path.
Authored OperatorHawksThe customizable former Republic officer who leads Zero Company and deploys on required story missions.Starting pathPlayer selectedUnique TalentFearless LeaderTalent progression6 tiers and custom humanoid Operators use the standard pool; authored, story, and droid paths have their own restrictions. - Target rank: name the exact node that solves the next mission’s problem. The Focus reference shows every current description and ceiling without choosing for you.
- Slot: if the target is a final standard rank, put that Specialization in the primary slot. If the target is at or below the secondary ceiling, either slot can reach it.
- Prerequisites: Purchase the previous node to gain access to this one. A later rank cannot be bought as a shortcut. A roster gate may also remain: Increase roster level by completing missions.
Focus Points come from roster progression, Bonds, and missions. The source changes when points arrive; it does not change the rank order or slot ceiling.
Compare primary and secondary ceilings
Every standard tree uses the same three branch lengths.
Standard SpecializationAssaultThe Assault is a frontline fighter that excels at maneuvering in battle to score medium to close-range kills against targets hiding in cover. Operators trained in this way are lethal opponents.Signature structurePassive · Standard · UltimateUltimateSweeping Salvo is the worked record below, and the same totals apply across all eight standard trees.
| Branch | Primary ceiling | Secondary ceiling | Final nodes lost in secondary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passive | V | IV | 1 |
| Standard | VI | V | 1 |
| Ultimate | VI | V | 1 |
| Whole tree | 17 ranks | 14 ranks | 3 |
Use the ceiling as a decision boundary:
| Situation | Choose | Why | Cost | Failure signal | Next check |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your target is Passive V, Standard VI, or Ultimate VI | Primary | Only the primary slot reaches the final standard rank | Another Specialization must take the shallower slot | The target node is visible but cannot be purchased in secondary | Recheck the target’s ceiling in the Focus reference |
| Your target is no deeper than Passive IV, Standard V, or Ultimate V | Either slot | Both slots can reach that node | Secondary still cannot grow into the final node later | The plan quietly starts depending on a final rank | Decide whether to swap before buying further ranks |
| The Operator uses a fixed story or droid path | Follow that path’s own record | Standard secondary math is not published for unique paths | You cannot assume the standard 17/14 split | The page reports no secondary ceiling | Check eligibility and the exact path instead of forcing the standard model |

Follow the rank prerequisite
The rule is linear within each branch. To target rank VI, ranks I through V must already be purchased in that branch. Ranks bought in another branch do not replace those prerequisites.

Some adjacent ranks repeat the same description. That is not permission to infer a hidden AP, damage, range, cooldown, or chance increase. Treat the published description as the complete claim unless the game lists a new value.
Work through the current examples
These cases are calculated from the same current trees and ceilings used by the query page.
| Case | Calculated result | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Available; ceiling VI; 5 earlier ranks; 6 ranks through the target | Keep |
|
| Not available; ceiling V; target is 1 rank beyond it | Stop at V or swap |
|
| Available; ceiling V; 4 earlier ranks | A secondary can reach this target; rank VI still requires primary | |
| Not available; published ceiling is not applicable | Use Tel-Rea’s fixed path rules, not the standard-slot model |
The distinction is reachability, not a recommendation about which combat role is best. Use the Specialization guide for role combinations; use the database for the exact node text.
Refund or swap safely
The current Specialization prompts cover two cases:
- Assigning the same Specialization as secondary removes it from primary because one Operator cannot hold the same type twice. Specializations cannot be assigned twice on the same Operator. Assigning a Specialization as their secondary specialization removes it as their primary specialization. All spent Focus Points will be refunded.
- Swapping primary and secondary keeps the one-of-each rule. You can only have one specialization of each type per Operator. Would you like to swap your primary and secondary specializations? All spent Focus Points will be refunded.
Both prompts say all spent Focus Points are refunded. For an example with 10 points already spent, the calculated outcome is 10 refunded and 0 left committed. Ten is an example input, not a fixed budget or fee.
Use this sequence:
- Open Personnel → Focus Tree between missions.
- Note the target rank and whether its current slot can reach it.
- Change or swap the Specialization. Confirm the refund prompt.
- Rebuy the chosen branches from rank I upward.
- Before leaving Personnel, verify that the intended primary and secondary labels are still assigned and that the target rank is purchased.
Success signal: the point total returns before the rebuild, every purchased node has its previous node, and the target remains inside the chosen slot’s ceiling.
If it fails: do not deploy with a half-rebuilt tree. Reopen the Operator, confirm the slot assignment, and spend the returned points in sequence. If the change action is absent, check the selected Operator’s availability record instead of inventing an unlock time or forcing a fixed path into the standard pool.
Keep Talents in their own track
Primary and secondary ceilings apply to standard Specializations, not to universal Talent ladders. The current catalog has 10 four-rank choices for custom humanoid Operators and one three-rank

Authored Operators keep their fixed personal Talents.
Check eligibility before spending, then follow the same previous-node requirement inside the published ladder. Do not plan a universal Talent for an authored Operator, and do not treat a Specialization swap prompt as proof that an ineligible Talent can move with it. The Focus reference’s Talent view owns the complete list and exact effects.
Check before deployment
Run this final check in Personnel:
- The Operator is eligible for both assigned paths.
- The Specialization containing the deepest required rank is primary.
- Every target node is at or below its slot ceiling.
- Each purchased rank has the previous rank in the same branch.
- Refunded points have been spent again or deliberately left available.
- The next mission actually uses the action, passive, or Talent you funded.
If all six are true, leave Personnel and deploy. If one is false, fix that item before launch; changing the plan is still free of a listed refund penalty between missions.
Fix common failures
- The last node will not unlock: check the branch’s previous rank, the roster requirement, and whether the tree is secondary.
- A VI node disappeared after a swap: the path is now secondary and stops at V for Standard and Ultimate branches. Make it primary or plan around V.
- A Passive V node disappeared: standard secondary Passive branches stop at IV.
- The point total returned but the build feels empty: a refund does not automatically recreate the old tree. Rebuy every branch in order.
- A unique path shows no secondary ceiling: that is not zero and not seventeen. The standard calculation does not apply.
- A repeated description looks unchanged: do not manufacture a stat increase. Compare the exact rank text in the reference.
