This guide starts after an Operator’s primary job already works. Pick that primary role below to get one secondary Specialization and, for a custom humanoid Operator, one universal Talent. Each answer is a practical default with a stated cost and a condition for changing it.

  • Authored paths: story Operators follow the Specializations assigned or permitted by their own records. A standard recommendation does not unlock a path that their Personnel screen does not offer.

An Operator cannot hold the same Specialization in both slots. The current assignment rule states: Specializations cannot be assigned twice on the same Operator. Assigning a Specialization as their secondary specialization removes it as their primary specialization. All spent Focus Points will be refunded. If the game has not yet exposed the secondary slot for that Operator, keep the primary plan and wait for the published secondary-Specialization prompt rather than assuming an unlock Cycle.

Which role must stay primary?

All 8 standard Specializations use the same current ceiling: 17 primary ranks and 14 secondary ranks. A secondary loses the final rank of every branch.

BranchPrimary ceilingSecondary ceiling
Passive54
Standard65
Ultimate65

Keep a Specialization primary when the build depends on its final Passive, Standard, or Ultimate rank. A target no deeper than the secondary ceiling can live in either slot. Open the exact primary and secondary records from the selected answer before spending; the query page owns every rank description, included trait, and eligibility line.

The branch order still matters. Purchase the previous node to gain access to this one. A rank bought in another branch does not replace that prerequisite. Roster progression can also block a visible node: Increase roster level by completing missions.

How should you test the build?

Test the pair on two comparable missions. Before deployment, write down three expected actions:

  1. the ordinary action that proves the primary role is working;
  2. the repeated failure that should trigger the secondary action;
  3. the turn or target that should trigger the Talent, if the Operator is eligible for it.

Success signal: the primary handles its normal job, the secondary is used only when the named failure appears, and the Talent triggers without forcing a worse action.

Failure signal: the secondary action sits unused, duplicates another Operator’s job, or makes the Operator abandon the primary job. For a Talent, failure means its required target or situation never appears during the turns this Operator already wants to take.

Change one part at a time. If the primary works but the fallback action does not, change the secondary first. If both role actions work but the Talent never triggers, change the Talent on an eligible custom Operator. If the primary action itself has no useful target, this is no longer a pairing problem.

How do you repair a bad pair?

Focus Points can be spent and refunded between missions. Swapping the slots refunds the committed points: You can only have one specialization of each type per Operator. Would you like to swap your primary and secondary specializations? All spent Focus Points will be refunded. The current rule lists no retained spend, but the refund does not rebuild the tree for you.

Use this recovery sequence:

  1. Open the Focus Trees query and name the exact deepest rank the Operator still needs.
  2. Put that Specialization in the primary slot if the target is above the secondary ceiling.
  3. Confirm that the second Specialization is different and legal for the Operator.
  4. Accept the refund, then rebuy each chosen branch from its first rank in order.
  5. For a custom humanoid Operator, open the selected Talent record and confirm its trigger still matches the intended turn.
  6. Before deployment, verify both slot labels, every purchased prerequisite, and the expected ordinary action.

If the pair still fails after two comparable missions, return to the selected panel’s Change when condition. Use the four-Operator squad guide when the missing job belongs on another squad member rather than in this Operator’s secondary slot.
