Start with one owner for each of four jobs: finish, setup, protection, and mission movement. This default is for a blind first campaign. It gives every normal turn a purpose without pretending that one named lineup is mandatory.

This is one legal starting answer, not four independent recommendations. If an authored or required Operator already performs one job, count that Operator as the owner and fill the remaining jobs. Do not add a fifth job by asking one of the four slots to abandon its ordinary turn.

Handle a required Operator
Required deployments come first. Resolve Can't Launch Mission - Missing Required Squad Members, then rebuild the four jobs around every locked member.
- Put each required Operator into the deployment.
- Name the job their current build can perform on an ordinary turn.
- Remove the duplicate role from the old four.
- Give the newly open slot to the missing job.
Open the Mission query and read the exact required squad before launch. A required member changes who owns a job, not the four-job check itself.
Recruit for a job
The first Recruitment step opens 3 slots. Each hire uses 1 Roster Slot plus the displayed Credits cost. The active squad still fields no more than 4 Operators.
Recruit only when a candidate fills a missing job or becomes the healthy reserve for it. If every visible candidate duplicates work the roster already covers, refresh the list and keep the slot open. The candidate panel owns the current Credit cost, so check that number before confirming.
Roster size is not squad size
Capacity creates reserves and matchup options. It does not add a fifth Operator to a normal four-Operator deployment.
Choose a capacity route
Match the current roster state to one answer. The first two rows decide whether to recruit. The remaining rows decide how to reach the next slot.
Open slot, missing job
Answer: Recruit one candidate who fills the missing job or provides its healthy reserve.
- Cost
- One Roster Slot plus the Credits displayed for that candidate.
- Change when
- Every current candidate duplicates work the healthy roster already covers; refresh instead of settling.
Open slot, no job gap
Answer: Keep the slot open and preserve Credits for the next proven need.
- Cost
- The roster has one fewer optional matchup or Injury replacement for now.
- Change when
- A required deployment, Injury, or repeated mission failure leaves one of the four jobs uncovered.
Crew upgrade available
Answer: Buy the earliest available Increased Crew Quarters tier, then recruit for the missing reserve job.
- Cost
- Capacity takes the current Crew Quarters choice before another available company improvement.
- Change when
- No capacity tier is currently available or the active four already lack a fix that another recruit would supply.
Zone Aurek is closer
Answer: Reach the current Roster Capacity reward in Zone Aurek before diverting Influence to another Zone.
- Cost
- The reward requires 20 Influence in Zone Aurek and delays progress on another Zone track.
- Change when
- Zone Krill is already closer to the same capacity reward or a Crew Quarters tier becomes available first.
Zone Krill is closer
Answer: Reach the current Roster Capacity reward in Zone Krill before diverting Influence to another Zone.
- Cost
- The reward requires 20 Influence in Zone Krill and delays progress on another Zone track.
- Change when
- Zone Aurek is already closer to the same capacity reward or a Crew Quarters tier becomes available first.
No capacity route is ready
Answer: Delay the hire and rebuild the next deployment from the healthy roster you already own.
- Cost
- The squad has less reserve coverage until a capacity source becomes reachable.
- Change when
- A Crew Quarters tier unlocks, one capacity Zone reaches its threshold, or an open slot returns.
The current catalogs expose 6 additional slots from Crew Quarters and 2 from Zone rewards, for 8 known additional slots in total. This is not the final roster maximum. The tutorial’s 3 figure is open space at that moment, not the full roster’s starting size.

The no-slot message says: Unlock additional slots to recruit Read the message first, because more Credits do not fix a full roster and more capacity does not unlock a missing recruit pool.
Test one change
Use the same mission type, difficulty, and four-job check for two attempts.
Success signal: every Operator uses the action tied to their job, the failed action becomes reliable, and the replacement does not leave another job blank.
Failure signal: the new role sits unused, the same action fails again, or two Operators now wait for the same target, tile, or resource.
When the test fails, undo that single replacement. Return to the selected panel’s Change when line, choose the new repeated failure, and test one different slot. A bigger roster helps only when its reserve has a named job in this loop.
