A low hit chance is usually a board-state problem before it is a luck problem. Read the current target and firing tile first: cover inflicts a -35% Chance-To-Hit penalty unless the attacker is flanking, while range and height have their own current descriptions.

Choose your shot state

What is the targeting interface telling you right now?

No line of sight

Move or remove the blocker before judging hit chance.

Premise
This answer applies when: No line of sight.
Do now
Move or remove the blocker before judging hit chance. Open Shot Breakdown and verify HIT CHANCE, CRIT CHANCE, DAMAGE.
Why this answer
No Line of Sight
Tradeoff
A better displayed shot can still be a worse turn if movement consumes the attack or opens dangerous enemy lines.
Alternative
The preview fails to change the intended factor, the route costs too much AP, or another target solves the turn more safely.
If it fails
The expected line, range, cover, height, or AP state does not appear in the live preview.
Recovery
Cancel the move, keep the current protected tile, and switch target or use another Operator for setup.
Done when
The intended attack is legal, its displayed factors are understood, and the final tile is defensible.
Next action
Commit only after the live targeting preview confirms the change.

Moving may consume the shot

Do now
Preview the route and confirm enough AP remains for the intended attack. Open Shot Breakdown and verify HIT CHANCE, CRIT CHANCE, DAMAGE.

Read the shot before moving

Check in this order: line of sight, effective range, cover or exposed state, height, then AP remaining after the route. No Line of Sight and OUT OF RANGE are eligibility problems; a hit-chance modifier cannot make an illegal shot legal.

Use Toggle Shot Breakdown when the number is surprising. Its current fields are HIT CHANCE, CRIT CHANCE, DAMAGE. Record those fields from the current tile before previewing a move.

Preview a destination without committing. Confirm that the intended blocker, range state, or cover penalty changes in the targeting UI. Then check the route cost and every enemy line opened by the new tile.

Accuracy and Cover mechanicExposedTargets are considered Exposed when they are not protected from the attack by Cover. Some enemies do not use Cover and bonuses do not apply.TriggerThe target is not protected from the attack by CoverIconShared Strike The Flanks icon used for Exposed means cover does not protect the target from that attack. High ground allows more accurate attacks, but the rule does not make every elevated tile safe. The live preview decides whether the move produces the intended shot.

Personal response or stack Talents can add their own conditions. Their thresholds, sight checks, and stack consumption belong to the Operator Talent records; this page owns only the shared targeting state.

Recover a bad angle

Cancel the move if the expected factor stays unchanged. If line of sight remains blocked, choose another route or target. If range remains invalid, preserve AP rather than walking into danger. If the shot improves but the destination opens several enemy lines, return to cover and build a safer setup with another Operator.

The decision is closed when the attack is legal, Shot Breakdown explains its current result, the route leaves enough AP, and the final position survives the likely response.
